SWALLOWS BUILDING NESTS

Swallows on our farm build nests out of spring mud, plant material, chicken feathers or other natural materials.  They hold the mud or materials in their beaks when flying back to the location they have chosen to build their nest.

If they have built them in a busy location, they will fly away from the nest to distract the intruders or even "dive-bomb them" and then return back to their nest when the intruders are gone.

They start in small layers which could develop into a condo used year after year T
They choose firm supports such as light fixtures  or door jams with an narrow ledge

Mom (or Dad!) patiently sets on the eggs waiting for them to hatch This nest has five eggs

Newly hatched chicks are pink and featherless They are beginning to grow black feathers and can not lift their heads yet

Note: beaks are the white "V's" and the one in the middle is looking towards  the top of the picture

Their necks are stronger now.  They are sleeping until their parents bring them food. Their feathers look like peach fuzz!

This nestling has opened his eyes and is ready to eat! Mom or Dad flies by and they are fed while in flight!

Proud Mom and her babies. She no longer needs to sit on them to keep them warm.

In just a few days they have grown in size - ruffled feathers and plump. They are legs are getting stronger as they balance on the side of their nest. (note: There is no adult bird in this picture)

They are waiting patiently in line for their parents to fly by with food

Three minutes later they are hiding back in their nest.
To practice flying they travel from the door jam to the can on top of the egg refrigerator just five feet away. He has  made the big flight outside. He is the weakest and his nest-mates are already flying around.
All three baby birds have met up on a solar panel. Mom and dad still fly by and feed them while in flight. The nest is now empty. They fly around inside the building with their parents and land on light fixtures but they never have returned to their nest for the night.
